Your 20s might be the most important decade of your financial life. Not because you’re making the most money (you probably aren’t), but because it’s the money you do make that has the most time to grow. It’s also when we’re the most impressionable—unsure of who we are, who to trust, and what matters. At 27, here are a few financial beliefs I wish I could've told my 20 year-old self: 💍 1. You don’t have to have your whole life figured out by 25. At 20, I thought I’d be married with kids by now. That mindset shaped a lot of my financial decisions. But life took a different (better) path when I gave myself room to change. And yes, it’s okay if your 20-year-old plan didn’t pan out. 🏠 2. Renting isn’t throwing money away. My fiancé and I saved for a house post-grad, only to face the most out-of-reach housing market in history. For a while, we still believed buying was “best,” but the numbers didn’t make sense. Renting gave us freedom, stability, and savings. Success today might look like raising a family in a rental and affording more for them in other ways. 🎨 3. You don’t need to monetize every hobby. I thought my job had to align with my passions or I’d never love work. But now I see that work doesn’t need to be your dream—it just needs to fund it. Keeping hobbies as hobbies keeps them joyful. And higher income can actually help you afford more of what you love outside of work. 🧠 4. Choose your college degree based off its ROI, not what feels right or fun. If you’re unsure what to major in, don’t just go with what sounds “safe” or what others recommend. There are free resources like FREOPP that show what grads actually earn based on specific schools and degrees.
