De Rerum Natura Cyrano and Gilliatt are my faves for Babaa sweaters. They have the rustic 'tooth' while still being soft enough to wear, and a joy to work with. And pure merino wool, so these sweaters will last forever.

How can you tell if yarns are “toothy” from online research? Are you looking at a specific type of wool (sounds like merino or alpaca) or is there a metric you’re looking at?

It took ten seconds for you to explain and I know, hours of research. As a woman of the people, I hope perfect sweater weather always finds you. 💕🙏

Doesn’t that make the sweater incredibly itchy to wear?

1. first time hearing about Baabaa sweater. Very interesting 2. is there a pattern out there for purchase? I have lots of non superwash and my Baba ( dad in Arabic 😂) needs a sweater for Christmas.

Do you have suggestions for a yarn for someone who wants the structure of more rustic wool but has a really hard time with the itchiness?

Do you think it’s possible to knit a Babaa sweater in 100% cotton yarn?

Omg I have been contemplating this exact question. I ordered a bunch of drops Nepal (wool alpaca blend) for a Babaa dupe, I hope it works out!!!!

Small plug for buying from USA mills like Junction Fiber Mill, Green Mountain Spinnery, or for buying directly from sheep farms at your local fiber fest!

I would even say don’t use extrafine merino. It’s too drape-y. If anything add an alpaca, it can give it a more rustic look

I just invested in bunch of Noro Haunui and I think it’s going to make an incredible MFTK No. 30. I’ve knit up a bit of it and it’s so soft and rustic and lovely - would highly recommend if you’re looking for a splurge-y treat

Feelin so validated because I was this 🤌🏽 close to buying superwash yarn for my lakes (babaa dupe) and I ended up going with a toothy rustic (hedgerow) yarn and when it came I panicked for a sec thinking it wasn’t soft enough, but now it’s knitting up beautifully and has amazing texture… so yeah love to learn these details!! Makes all the difference! Yarn scholar!
