Ugie-Iron is one of the most crucial part of the Igue festival, the festival re-enacts the 13th-century legendary battle between Oba Ewedo and the Edion, who sought to compare themselves with the monarch. It was a civil war that reduced the edion powers in the kingdom forever. Oba Ewedo supported by his people, troops, Millitary generals like → Odigie of Ebuya whom he later made the first iyase of Benin kingdom, Edogun and Ogiamien to name a few. It was during the cause of this civil war the royal palace was moved from Usama to Alaka “Adesogbe”, were it still stand to date, royal titles created in their numbers to reduced the edion influence. It was during this civil war the name Uzama was given to them, hence they are not seen as chiefs but edion “Elders of the kingdom” Edion n’Uzama was coined for them. Chief Oliha heads this council and during every Ugie-Iron they re-enact this battle excluding the Edaiken at the Ugha-Erha’Oba courtyard against the Oba military headed by chief Edogun one of the Benin war commanders, under the iyase chain.
