@maxdiscovertravel: Discover the Secret Temples of King Gesar's Land ~~~ Journey into the heart of Kham, Tibet, where ancient legends echo through time. Explore the rich Tibetan culture and witness the enduring spirit of Tibetan Buddhism in this travel documentary. Delve into the epic history of this remarkable region. ~~~ In the heart of Kham—Derge and Baiyü—beats the ancient world of King Gesar. Here, steel meets spirit in the craft of the famed Baiyü Tibetan blades. Along the Ba-Bai and Gan-Bai roads, the mountains still rise like hymns, and the culture burns with an undying glow. Baiyü holds three great monasteries: Palyul Monastery, Kathok Monastery, and Yarchen Gar—Yarchen you met in the last episode. Palyul has stood for nearly four centuries, its 1980s revival supported by Penor Rinpoche of the Palyul Monastery in India. Kathok, rooted in the historic capital of the Kingdom of Derge, carries nearly nine centuries of history. At 4,800 meters, its temples rise almost 700 meters above the valley floor—majestic, solemn, immovable. Deeper in the rugged gorges of the Jinsha River lies Sanyan. Its people claim descent from exiles of the ancient Guge Kingdom, preserving a rare patrilineal clan system and polyandry—earning them the name “the last Göba.” For generations they lived beyond the reach of kings, known for their fierce isolation. Everyone once carried a gun—women included—and the tribe was famed for its bandit culture. Look at that — even the road markers are riddled with bullet holes! That tells you just how explosive their temper can be. Sanyan’s tree-burial tradition, reserved for infants and young children, is guided by a living lama. The child is placed into the embrace of a symbolic mother tree—a prayer for a gentler rebirth, a swift ascent, and freedom from sorrow’s return. ~~~ If you’re planning a beautiful journey, why not get in touch with us?
