@live.connected: A photographer, Andrew McCarthy, captured what looks like a skydiver falling past the sun’s surface, even though the skydiver is 50 million times closer to the camera than the sun. The shot, called “The Fall of Icarus,” required extreme precision. The photographer set up telescopes in the desert and had his friend jump from a small aircraft positioned perfectly between him and the sun. They had to calculate the right location, time, aircraft distance, the power-off glideslope for the optimal sun angle, and safe exit altitude. It took six attempts to line up the aircraft with the sun before the skydiver finally jumped. They coordinated the exact moment on three-way comms while dealing with multiple malfunctions that almost prevented the shot. The skydiver jumped from around 3,500 feet, about 8,000 feet from the camera. They only had one chance—repacking the parachute would have taken too long for another attempt. The sun is currently in its most active phase of its 11-year cycle, making the solar surface particularly dramatic. The photographer called it “the most preposterously fake-looking real photo I’ve ever captured” and said it might be the first photo of its kind in existence.
