This is so sad. So many people died for greed. This also happened in Nairobi, Kenya in a supermarket too people also died. The owners were not persecuted but our ancestors decided that they will do it themselves. A few years later the supermarket went bankrupt and closed down for good.

This tracks for Paraguay tbh. I have family there and it’s still very corrupt even with the “new” (since Stroessner) government. The Colorado party still retains much of the power in the government. There are very little by way of building codes. I’m not sure if was the same at the time, but this area of Asunción is VERY affluent, but it doesn’t mean they are safe from the corruption. Additionally, I should note there is now a memorial and cultural center at the site of this tragedy. It was just opened a few years ago, so I haven’t personally seen it, but it seems like a fitting way to honor the victims. Opening a communal space free to the public, with a library and talks. No more being locked in for not paying.
