Literally their best film director (Tarkovsky) left the Soviet Union to avoid censorship in his movies.

Btw, because of USSR censorship, soviet culture is much more smaller and least complicated. For example, name a popular soviet film that everyone knows (except Tarkovsky and "Come and watch")

This is partially true, the soviet union had pretty strict regulations when it came to art, optimistic realism was the only kind allowed there. The cia saw the expressive freedom in abstract art and funded their art exhibitions as a counter to soviet realism.

this is partially true but it leaves out the many schisms in the soviet art world leading up to stalin. soviet realism is an asset of extreme authoritarianist regimes. the avant-guard bolshevik art genres like constructivism and suprematism that came before S.R. emerge from leftist revolutionaries who were later slaughtered by stalin. these revolutionary modernist art styles were the main inspiration in the american 1950s abstract art movements alongside bauhaus, which similarly, was stomped out by another auth regime: nazi germany. i understand the point you’re making and the cia involvement narrative is compelling, but don’t fall for the mythos of soviet realism so easily. it’s the epitome of reactionary communism, not revolutionary communism.

Art reflects a society’s state. Good art =good society, bad art= bad society you do the research and tell me your inferences of the time periods of which the art came from and the current state or infrastructure of the country from the time which it came
