This picture was taken right before I preached session one of our very first Reach1 Conference last month. Honestly, I went back and forth about posting it. What’s crazy about social media is the very real wrestle it creates. The wrestle to keep your flesh submitted to the Spirit. The wrestle against the fallacy and cheap dopamine of views and reshares. But there’s also beauty in choosing to make it about Him — to care more about what God thinks than about likes, comments, or validation. I’ve been guilty of all of it. I’ve cared too much about how people see me. I want people to like me. I have battled and still battle pride. I’ve questioned my motives, my heart, my posts, and I’ve compared myself to others. I’ve bought into the lie of the algorithm at times. But there is so much freedom in transparency. And through it all, I’m reminded that Jesus will still use you despite your insecurities and struggles. Some might look at this picture and assume I’m trying to look deep or more spiritual than I really am. But that’s not what was happening here. In this moment, I was being reminded. I would’ve never made it to this stage if it wasn’t for Jesus. It wasn’t my plan to host a conference where thousands would gather hungry for His presence. It wasn’t my plan to lead a movement with my wife where we would see Jesus deliver addicts, heal those battling eating disorders, restore the suicidal with hope, and transform lives in real time. But despite my flaws, despite my limitations, despite me, here we are. Right before I stepped onto that stage, the presence of Jesus hit me in a way that humbled me to my core. I felt Him whisper, “Never forget, this isn’t about you.” And He’s right. Like David prayed, “Create in me a clean heart, O God,” I’m continually reminded that God can use a broken vessel when that vessel stays surrendered. My prayer is that this picture doesn’t point to me, but to the faithfulness of God. A reminder that what’s impossible for man is completely normal for Him. And if He can do it through me, He can do it through anyone. With God, all things are possible. And that’s worth celebrating.
