burry saying they're only good for one year is a bit uninformed but 6 years seems questionable too

As a Controller- Burry is correct. I think 2 years *could* be argued, but noone is going to want 2025 chips in 2027.

Wow with such rapid advances. There is no way they would last 6 years. Good call. I’ve been thinking that the AI world will end up with new accounting rules after the crash. Similar to Enron.

I disagree with burry. other capital assets such as construction equipment and equipment used in the oil and gas industry are improved annually as well. However, they are depreciated over a number of years which very depending on what the asset is.

There's an argument that pretty much any electronic device has a shorter lifespan than accounting depreciation rules allow if the assumption is that the device MUST be upgraded every time technology improves. In reality devices are probably not upgraded every year, especially when the price tag is considerable, but perhaps 5 to 6 years is too optimistic as well.

I recently read that nvda, pltr, tsla are from 25 to 40% retail owned. Most stable companies with regular acct’g practices are 80 to 95% institutionally owned. Institutional investors are mostly not falling for this AI smoke and mirrors.

as a tech person, there’s another angle to consider: chinese open source llm. they run much leaner and perform just as well. stretching the usefulness of older chips

Publicly traded companies usually provide non-GAAP measures ie Ebitda that adjust for noncash transactions. It’s a non issue.

It is a misunderstanding. According to tax law, the computers and similar hardware can be deappreciated with 5 years. 😏😏😏😏

I absolutely concur. I worked in capital equipment before. AI chips should depreciate to zero in 2 years the most.

Nah it’s should not be one year. In some cases the prices for those chips are going up over time. These chips are not your typical cpu chips that are outdated within 18 mos.

Burry is wrong. Its a massive investment by hyperscalars - they will depreciate over number of years. If a new chip comes around then the older chip will be used for other applications. No wonder burry closed his fund, he was a one hit wonder and was consistently wrong

100% agree w Burry. Little surprised it took this long for someone w some clout to point out. This is just one feature of the infinite money glitch.

Burry is wrong. It is the useful life according to the business. Does not mean that the business needs a faster CPU every year. Besides, those are non-cash items. They only become cash items at the company has to issue capital to re-purchase.

I worked in the computer engineering field all my life. I would say three to four years as a reasonable estimate. These often get sold and reused for another two or three or someplace else. They're not worthless after 3 years

Burry was a genius in accurately assessing MBS. However, he underestimated the chip longevity so much that it is almost laughable. Most people outside the tech industry don’t realize that chip is only a small part of the gigantic complex system. Nobody stops using the chip 1 year after the upgrade because it may take 1 year to fully upgrade all the layers in the system!
