@erinmcgoff: ‼️ psa - it’s open enrollment season & if you’re in the U.S. & plan on getting pregnant in the next 12-24 months, start reading up on STDI (short term disability insurance). 📚 Plans vary widely between different states (like CA has great paid family leave while Florida has nothing) but STDI is available across the country. Questions?? Ask your HR team, it’s part of their job to help you (you don’t have to give them any specifics. Just ask about the policies that are available). You got this 👏🏼 #healthinsurance #maternity #stdi #openenrollment
My job automatically enrolls us in STD and pays for it. Nice perk that I fully realized when I took my maternity leave!

My STD only paid for 4 weeks of my maternity leave. I had to use 2 weeks of my PTO to get a full 6 weeks of pay 🙃

Can I cancel my short term disability coverage part way through the year if I change my mind about trying for another baby?

If I opt in during enrollment in November for short term disability, then find out I’m pregnant later in December , would this mean I’m covered, or would it be based on when it kicks in 1/1/26?

Also, hospital indemnity plans will often pay you for being admitted to the hospital (like during childbirth) so that’s another great benefit.

For my salary, I will lose 14k if I take 8 weeks of maternity leave on STD unless I use all of my vacation, which will then leave me with none for the year. 🙂 have kids they say.

FYI some employers will still treat pre-birth, pregnancy-related “disability” as part of your parental leave and not let you use your separate ST disability. So they start the clock on your X number of weeks (if you get that) before the birth.

Does this work for men as well? Or solely the mother?

quick note that in my case I have to be enrolled for 12 straight months BEFORE I can claim for it, so enrolling now for a 2027 pregnancy is smart
