One of the biggest misconceptions I hear as a pediatric speech-language pathologist and researcher is: “If a child uses a tablet to communicate, isn’t that just screen time?” The answer is no. 📱 When a child uses a speech-generating device (SGD) or AAC app, it’s not passive entertainment - it’s active communication. It’s not screen time. It’s their voice. 🔎 Research and professional organizations like @ashaweb and the @ameracadpeds are clear: AAC is a therapeutic tool that supports language growth, independence, and participation. Far from limiting development, AAC strengthens vocabulary, social interaction, and confidence. ✨ When we confuse AAC with “screen time,” we risk dismissing a child’s primary means of communication. Instead, we need to recognize and celebrate it as a lifeline. 👩‍⚕️ As both a mom and SLP, this distinction is personal for me.
