@laylaleannetaylor: To the kids growing up in a racially homogenous environment, I’d like to say that you’re beautiful. What makes you different does not make you less than. Embrace what makes you stand out. Love yourself for all that you are and don’t be afraid to be who you are. For my whole life I avoided anything that made me feel different from my peers. Coming from an extremely traumatic childhood where I never felt like I had a place, all I wanted was to belong. I didn’t realize the effects of how growing up in a predominantly white community would continue to affect me to this day. I wish I could give little me a hug and tell her how beautiful she is. She doesn’t need to straighten her hair or lighten her skin. She can have pride in who she is and her beautiful heritage. It took me 24 years to truly embrace all sides of me, and I’m proud of who I’ve become. The things I’ve gone through and the challenges I’ve faced have made me who I am. Here’s to many more hair discoveries, speaking up, and showing the world who Layla truly is. I’m extremely proud to be the only Black woman on @secretlivesonhulu. To any little boy or girl out there who doesn’t look like their friends and is feeling a bit lonely, you’re amazing and you can do whatever you set your mind to. Our differences give us strength. 🤍
