@girlsschoolbooks: Here’s the secret: Real learning happens in pairs. Two books is a conversation. That’s literally how metaphor theory works. This is how scholars read. This is how theorists think. And it’s the fastest way to level up your brain without stepping foot in a graduate seminar. When you read in pairs, your brain builds new meaning you literally cannot access from a single book. ✨That’s the hack.✨ If you want to learn like you have a master’s degree—stop reading books in isolation. #literarytheory #conceptualmetaphor #readersoftiktok #feministtheory #bookclub @Maybelline NY
I just came across a YT video of a woman recommending non-fiction novels to read paired with fiction novel of a topic of the non-fiction book. I really liked that idea

People think I’m crazy and noncommittal when I tell them I’m reading multiple books at the time!

I realized this accidentally in grad school. I kept finding deeper meanings and connections between books from entirely different classes. It’s so neat!

I’m never reading fewer than 5 books at a time, though they’re rarely connected this way

Could you clarify how this would be done in practice? Reading segments of both books at the same pace? Or one full book right after the other (while referencing the first)?

Is this also why storytelling is such an effective learning tool? Bc we’re bumping up the storyteller’s lived experience against ours?

I took algebra 2 and geometry at the same time in hs and it was so easy and helpful that I did that again in college by taking organic chemistry and biochemistry at the same time. It was soooooo much easier!!! I love hearing that this may be real outside my experience :D

I agree with this. When I was an English Language Arts (ELA) teacher, I taught supplemental texts, along with the specific literature that I taught. For example, Margaret Atwood’s Crow Song can be paired with George Orwell’s Animal Farm. It is important to start each lesson, however, with scaffolding, to ensure students are linking new knowledge with previously learned information.
