Many people are now calling for separation, and it is good that eyes are finally opening. But let me explain something important. In the 1990s, when Nigeria still felt like it was on a better path, we were operating a system closer to regionalism rather than the kind of federalism we have today. Under regionalism, each region had its own government, its own economic strength, and real decision-making power. The central government existed, but it did not dominate everything. The regions controlled their resources and determined their development at their own pace.
A system like that can still work in Nigeria. In fact, it is the only structure that can allow different cultures, economies, and priorities to grow without constant conflict. But the biggest obstacle is our political class. They will never willingly pass a law that returns power to the regions because doing so weakens the grip they currently enjoy at the center. And for many of them, that power is their entire identity.
So before we jump to separation, we need to understand that restructuring back to regionalism is a more realistic and peaceful solution. It worked for us before and it can work again, but only when we collectively demand it and stop letting politicians hide behind excuses that keep the country dependent and stagnant.
