Yep. There's no way that they'd have gotten as far as they have without some level of savvy and cleverness. Also, under the assumption(presumption? whichever fits best) of ignorance, there is some small inherent compulsion to forgive, or to take pity. We need to dismiss that notion as well.

this is how Trump got elected the first time. that man absolutely lacks critical thinking skills but he has pretty high social intelligence. his cognitive decline over the past ten years is apparent, but he cemented himself so firmly within his base in 2015-2018 that the decline doesn't matter

I don’t know how smart she actually is just as I don’t know how smart Trump actually is. But it doesn’t matter really. You don’t have to be smart to be a very capable grifter. Whether or not they are intelligent the way we think of, they have enough vision to see how to con people and to win a room.

The worst most evil people in the world are not stupid they wouldn't have gotten nearly as far as they do if that's the case theh are however fickle as hell and full of the audacity and arrogance to sincerely believe that their actions will not lead to negative consequences that they have to contend with/ said negative consequences are worth their worldly pleasures which imo is worse it's the difference between accidental actions and deliberate ones
