❗️TRIGGER WARNING with end of post ❗️ 💙Busy zoom support for members of Mouth Cancer Foundation Support Group welcoming a new friend into our safe space. One friend spoke about granulation issue and is using steroid cream to help with the inflammation process. Swallow issues and choking on tablets, dry mouth and dry lips, which started a conversation about lips and lip balm so Ali Lowe stepped in with suggestions of Lineipe sleeping masks for lips and Dr Paw Paw both can be bought online. One friend has a constant sore patch on his lip and uses yellow soft paraffin. Another friend tried out lip taping, first for a few hours during the day and is going to try it at night after noticing a positive difference. Was good to have the feedback. Our new friend said she had had a few different cancers before her mouth cancer and this has been the worst by far and living with the after effects. Another friend had neck massage for neck spasms through her hospice and said it really helped. Another friend suffering with sore gums (assuming it’s the warmer weather) but seeing dentist tomorrow to be on safe side and Jocelyn Harding Dental Hygienist suggested using Gengigel First Aid. Another friend is waiting on a procedure and hadn’t been given any information so has requested 6 questions to be answered to help with his anxiety as he can’t be under general anaesthetic for this. He needs to be reassured that phlegm won’t run down his throat as he is nil by mouth and has a history of aspiration. He was grateful to another friend recommending hyacine tablets as the patches aren’t available and these have helped to dry up saliva and phlegm. Another friend whose husband is struggling with emotions, and is scared for him. There has been talk of suicide (with H&NC the rate of suicide is double that of any other cancer group) his GP is aware and they are trying to get support. It’s difficult adjusting to life after this cancer, we sound different and look different. We go from the most confident of people to shells of our former selves. Frustrations with food, losing too much weight and hating life. This is particularly tough on the partner trying to look after and protect their loved one. We created a safe space for our friend to talk which is incredibly important. We don’t shy away from the difficult conversations that are needed within our safe space. All emotions are valid. Partners and family members also have a lot to contend with in this pathway. It can be a scary time. Several of our members work in education and talking to students, young and older can be extremely problematic. In the UK it’s easier to signpost to immediate crisis support but harder for our American friends, however an American friend was able to share contact information for an online therapist. Another friend is in need of another biopsy and her mind is in overdrive after having various surgeries already, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Mouth is very dry but going to try spraying Vit E for some lubrication 💙 #headandneckcancer #mentalhealthmatters #support #friendship #safespace #itsgoodtotalk #itsgoodtolisten #difficultconversations @MouthCancerFoundation
