It feels like, in part, classism and a consumer mindset tbh. They see these published works are made and think it’s okay to read (they are ofc), but fanfic is suddenly too “lowbrow” and pointless. And then what they bring up to defend their definition of “well-crafted and delicately explored” fiction with no “icky” parts are works like The Monk (very poor choice imo even if it was influential) or PMMM (incredible work ofc but the media in it and the age of the girls serves a dual purpose for both the theme and for certain other purposes).

I remember when Twitter still showed your likes and the amount of people who were super against problematic content by making call out posts or always speaking out against it would surprise surprise would eventually accidentally like the very same problematic content they were “against” on their main account rather than their secret privs. Then it would be just watching their followers and friends go at them because in such friend groups it really is all about walking on eggshells in fear of getting a google doc written about them.
