Being a fisherwoman is a privilege. Along with the privilege to be able to fish and enjoy the ocean and it’s bounty, comes the responsibility to respect it and protect it. I can not even begin to articulate the heartache I feel for all lobstermen and women in light of @seafoodwatch “red list” if you’re not familiar with the list. It is a list put together by the Monterey bay aquarium to inform the public which seafood is sustainably caught and safe to support. It is a great concept if they use good data to support the claims. According to their website Lobsterfishers were added for two reasons overfishing and danger to the Right Whales. North Atlantic right whales are critically endangered and protected in the U.S. under the marine mammal protection act and the endangered species act. From 1970 to 2010, the right whale population more than doubled. In 2017, scientists learned that the right whale population had been in decline since 2010. This decline is a result of several factors, including warming waters due to climate change, a shift in prey habitat and abundance, ship strikes, and fishing gear entanglements. Lobstermen/women have been the forefront of right whale protections since 1997 when the first Atlantic Large Whale Take Reduction Plan was adopted. Lobstermen have made many changes in how they fish to make the fishery safer in the rare event a right whale encounters lobster gear. Some of the changes lobsterfishers have made; *Whale safe sinking rope, no more floating rope. *Reduced the number of lines in the water by consolidating single traps to multiple trap trawls. *Weak links or whale break aways *Weak rope (breaks away if a whale come into contact with the line) *All states on the east coast now mark lines with different colors representative of each state so in the chance of an entanglement they can know where exactly the whale became entangled. In 2021 seasonal closures were implemented to take traps out of the water completely where whales movement and travels are more frequent.
