I love shutting down critical parts of my brain so I can fit in with normal people

Before I quit drinking, people LOOOOOVED hanging put with me. They thought I was hilarious. One girl said I was “easily the funniest guy I’ve ever dated.” The moment I realized I needed to quit, allllll of that disappeared.

I hate saying I quit drinking bc I was never addicted to alcohol, but I was dependent on it for socialising. When I stopped, social circle vanished.

If you’re an autistic psychologist specialising in autism, does that mean the special interests is your special interest?

I would refer to it as “stopping my synapses from synapsing” and it brought me “down to their level” so I could enjoy human interactions

It’s fantastic in the moment….. the next day, nooooot so much. Because then I just replay literally every thing I did or said the night before, and convince myself that I’ve made everyone hate me and then I have terrible anxiety the next day.

RemyPapi1738 :
I self-medicated with alcohol for 20 years and my memory was shot.
Then I looked into AuDHD individuals face a higher risk for alcohol-induced blackouts, stemming from combined neurobiological and behavioral factors. The ASD component contributes to pharmacodynamic hypersensitivity through GABAergic system dysregulation (e.g., reduced GABRA1/B3 subunit expression), establishing a lowered neurobiological amnesic threshold. This vulnerability is significantly compounded by ADHD-related impulsivity, self-medication strategies (drinking to achieve sensory suppression), and the use of stimulant medications, which mask intoxication and lead to higher peak BACs. The primary mechanism is accelerated GABAergic suppression coupled with baseline impaired prefrontal cortex-hippocampal connectivity.

When I drink I find conversations that I would normally find boring or confusing easy to enjoy. But my negative emotions become emphasized too. The best thing it’s for is to make me be able to enjoy being social.

Although I generally agree that therapy and coping strategies are a better and idea and is mostly what I rely on. I do think saying that it's comparable to the effectiveness of alcohol or can be substituted for it can be a little dangerous.

It’s like it deadens my senses and I’m less overwhelmed and irritated by the stimulus in my environment. Combined with less inhibition it makes it easier to just say the thing, or do the thing, without being overwhelmed by the “static”.
