I take Thomas’s poem not as a rageful fight against mortality but, as in having the audacity to give meaning to this life in spite of the absurdity and ultimate meaninglessness. However, I understand your perspective as well.

People die as they live. Each in their own way. I feel the way you do. Many want to fight and kick. To each their own.

an important note about this poem, it was not written for the reader, it was (probably) written for Dylan Thomas's father. I think it's best viewed not as advice for life, but as a recognition that the writer is not ready to accept his father's death. It's a love poem kind of.

Let me stop you there after 3 sentences - it isn’t fighting against death it is fighting against the dying of the light - of vitality , energy, strength and spark

Aging is just a complex cluster of disease and degradation, it should not be accepted or welcomed. It should face the same resistance as any other potentially fatal disease.

I get the interpretation, and it’s probably the most common one, but I always took it as an admonition to not die long before we are done. It often feels like a lot of people will stop living before it’s time to die. When it comes, I feel ready, but I don’t want to settle into it beforehand.

One of my ocs is a mythical creature. She was born human and became a creature of magic. She lived for hundreds of years. She loved manny and lost them all. She laughed and she loved, she cried and mourned. Lifetimes went by and then she found the one. The one love that was different then all the other loves. Though all loves are unique this one was unique in a new way. It was the one her soul had waited for. Finally she had found home. She found home in a mortal human. They had several decades of life together. Of trial, suspicion, trust, friendship and love. They fought through a war lived to see pease. And when death finally came for the human it was just that. Peace. He was now an old man lying in his bed with his wife and close friends, children and grandchildren by his side. She held his hand and squeezed it gently. He smiled at her and closed his eyes for the last time. It was gentle, beautiful and heartbreaking. For days the city mourned the loss of the life of a grate man, a husband, a friend, a father, a hero. The wife mourned the loss of her souls home for manny days. She would not be seen by others very often during those days. She would wander out to the forest outside the city. She'd walk under those grate old trees and think about her long life and all those she had loved. Her first love. Also a human man who had betrayed her and let the humans in the village burn her at the stakes. The manny other magical creatures she had loved. Some love had come easy, other love she had fought but it had been inescapable in it genteelness. Gently caressing and coaxing her heart to let it in. She wandered for hours reminiscing. Until she went out to the forest for the last time. No one knew it would be the last time they ever saw her. Not even the lady herself knew what was about to happen. But as she walked that day she thought about her last love how it had filled her, completed her like nothing had ever done before. She thought about how after her third love died and how she had not wanted to continue on after that. And how she had found a way to go on. Found other things to live for. She thought about the similarities of then and now.

Dignity. That’s the common denominator among the good deaths you describe. It’s hard to die because we are atomized into indignity. We recognize it in ourselves as crying infants but by adulthood we have bought the lie that dignity is earned, leaving us in the end with no facility to die well

I love this painting by Evelyn De Morgan. It portrays Death not only as a natural part of life and something not to be feared, but it is something that can be comforting.

1/ This poem always reminds me of the movie Interstellar (for obvious reasons), but I have never taken the line about raging against the dying light

I feel like women are far more accepting of death than men bc it’s not something we conquer, it’s something we embrace. Of that makes any sense

I’d argue it is your cultural bias assigning “male” to the resistance vs. acceptance to death approach. “The Evil Queen” from Snow White was a woman raging against aging and ultimately death. Frankenstein was written by a woman, and is about cheating death. There are thousands of references in popular culture.’
