at the time, paying the enslavers made sense for economic reasons and for social relations. however i agree that abe lincoln was not against slavery because he cared about black people, slavery simply wasn’t sustainable and the south’s economy was doomed as well as the idea that many white abolitionists had that slavery was taking jobs from poor white people. the civil war wasn’t even really about slavery the way people make it seem, sure the south wanted to succeed partially because they were scared of having to free their slaves, but abraham lincoln started the war because states aren’t allowed to just leave the union. he simply viewed the people in the south as american citizens. the main reason for the emancipation proclamation was to harm plantations and other enslavers economically. there was maybe 3 years after the war ended when congress was made up of northerners who truly cared about the futures of the black people in the south and the future of race relations in america, but unfortunately that didn’t last as states were allowed to rejoin congress. the compromise of 1877 is the most overlooked awful thing in american history

besides this, which isn’t even that bad, lincoln didn’t free the spaves because he sympathized with them. it was the best stance for him to take to reunite the country. that’s why we were emancipated
