A C-SPAN caller who identified as a Republican from Fort Belvoir, Virginia, pressed Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) on Thursday to pass a standalone bill to ensure active-duty troops get paid during the shutdown. "As a Republican, I'm very disappointed in my party, and I'm very disappointed in you because you do have the power to call the House back," she said on C-SPAN's morning call-in show, "Washington Journal." "You could stop this, and you could be the one that could say, 'Military is getting paid.' And I think it is awful, and the audacity of someone who makes six figures a year to do this to military families is insane." The woman said she lives paycheck to paycheck and has "two medically fragile children" and a husband who suffers from PTSD from his two tours in Afghanistan. "I'm begging you to pass this legislation," she said. "My kids could die." Speaker Johnson said he was sorry to hear about her situation and that it was stories like that that keep him up at night, but contended that House Republicans had already voted to fund the government and the ball was in Senate Democrats' court. "The Republicans are the ones delivering for you. We had a vote to pay the troops. It was the continuing resolution three weeks ago," he told her. "Every single Republican but two voted to keep the government open so that your paycheck can flow. Every Democrat in the House except for one voted to close it. The Democrats are the ones that are preventing you from getting a check." Without congressional action, military personnel will miss their first paychecks since the shutdown, which were scheduled to go out Wednesday. #mikejohnson #governmentshutdown #cspan
