Morrible was playing the long game and setting up that rumor to be believable.

It’s a wink. It’s foreshadowing. I don’t get what’s confusing about this…

The book Wicked establishes that Elphaba is allergic to water, stating it is a mysterious, inexplicable allergy that causes it to burn her skin like acid, though it doesn't provide a scientific reason. Because of this allergy, she bathes with oil and milk instead of water.

I think Morrible was being polite and going "Here, take this umbrella, no one wants to get rained on in this moment, I'll take care it" for the sake of being polite. I think it's playing off of the melting for us (the audience) but isn't actually connected to it or the concept in universe at all

I took it that Morrible was being polite because Elphaba has magical powers and is buttering her up for the Wizard. I do not think she truly believed she could melt. but once elphaba chose not to work with the Wizard, Morrible is a master of propaganda and perpetuated that water could melt her, and tied it to the umbrella event since there were multiple people that witnessed the interaction.

I think it’s just specifically placed foreshadowing for those who aren’t aware of the truth and also plays back to Wizard of Oz

It’s foreshadowing/breadcrumbing as a contingency plan

I don’t think the scene in part 1 was to foreshadow the water melting narrative but more to establish Morrible’s power with the weather. So when the tornado happened, Elphaba knew it wasn’t an accident.

I believe you’re overthinking it. Think about it this way, how would you feel if you just had your crowning achievement moment in front of your peers and professors, it would be embarrassing to have water pour down on you and drench you.

She said that cuz rain is just an overall inconvenience. Like imagine there was a storm going on during ur outside graduation ceremony. If you could use weather powers, wouldn’t that be a great time to use it

In Gregory Maguire’s novel Elphaba genuinely cannot touch water it burns and irritates her skin, so she avoids rain, bathes with oil, and keeps herself covered, making it a major part of her character and her isolation. This is very different from the stage musical and the new movie, where the creators completely remove the water allergy. In those versions, Elphaba touches water with no issue, and the famous “melting” scene is reimagined as symbolic or staged for narrative reasons rather than an actual biological vulnerability. So book Elphaba has a real physical reaction to water, while musical/movie Elphaba does not.

I think you all are overthinking it. I feel like its just a reference to get viewers thinking. To those who haven't seen the play, they are gonna relate it to The Wizard of Oz. They still belive Elphaba can be melted by water, so this confirms that fact in their head, so it kindof throws people off the ending.

The second Morrible said that, the first time I saw the film, my jaw dropped because she was playing chess not checkers with Elphaba! She planted that seed as a just in case clause. Wild! She’s so deeply wicked.
