It is a currency that (according to legend) originated in Papua New Guinea, and was brought to Langalanga Shell money is their life, it helps to settle conflicts, tribal issues, is the dowry, almost everything COLOR MEANINGS - Kurila: black shells - Keh: brown (turns to orange with heat) - Firay: red (represents eagle) - White - Black and white: protection in water - Brown turns orange when hot: represents octopus STEPS TO MAKE SHELL MONEY 1. Break shells (kids often help) 2. Shaped into small discs (didina) 3. Polish using piece of rock that was pounded into a paste (safa) 4. Change color of shells heating over rock if needed 5. Add hole in it 6. String it 7. Arana: polish it again 8. Put into the design After shell money is made they often to travel and exchange shell money for other root crops, or pigs to sacrifice.
