Mamdani's victory in New York City shows that working people are hungry for demands like a rent freeze, universal childcare, and free transit funded by taxing the rich. But at the same time, the Democratic Party put tens of millions of working people through hell in the government shutdown while claiming to fight for our healthcare, only to sell out as soon as the elections were over. The Democratic Party sold out on healthcare now for the same reason they never put forward the public option under Obama, and crushed universal healthcare bills in state after state. This is a party of the billionaires that will never fight for working people. Bernie, AOC, and other progressives have refused to organize mass movements to fight the rich and their political servants. Instead, they have capitulated to the Democratic Party establishment, giving left cover to the endless sell outs. Unfortunately we see the same strategy by Mamdani, who is holding meetings with billionaires, corporate Democrats, and even Trump, and not organizing the hundreds of thousands of people who volunteered for his campaign into a movement to take on Wall Street. As Kshama has said, "When you become part of a political organization that is controlled by the billionaires, it's the billionaire's agenda that holds sway, not our agenda." There is no avenue for working people to win under capitalism without declaring war back on the billionaire class.
