Why not just select by „color range“ and adjust the range of the white tones there? Then you can just delete everything in the selection, no need for an additional layer.

Rgb pull g to channel adjust select fill new layer. Done

nope. now you have white in the midtones and you loss detail in the shadows and highlights. Instead... Go to Green Channel. Copy. Eyedrop design color and create solid color layer. Paste into layer mask. Invert. Adjust levels but don't cut out the shadow and highlights unlike you showed. Hide other layers. Done.
