Where did ripstop come from? Great question! Ripstop fabric has its roots in the chaos of World War II. Allied forces were desperate for parachutes that would not fail when silk supplies were cut and combat jumps increased. Engineers turned to nylon and experimented with weaving in thicker threads in a small grid pattern. That simple idea meant tiny holes would stop at the next strong yarn instead of ripping all the way across a chute. The result was safer landings for paratroopers and more reliable supply drops.
