What made the Imperial Guards of the Han Dynasty so special that their position became one of the most sought after roles in the Han military system? Requirements to Become an Imperial Guard of the Han Dynasty Aside from combat ability, every Imperial Guard had to possess a clean background and be well educated. They were not ordinary conscripts like those serving in regular units. Most recruits came from prestigious clans, lower ranking nobility, or wealthy families throughout the Empire. Strength and Combat Capability of the Han Imperial Guards The Imperial Guards were selected from the most elite soldiers of military districts across the Empire. After selection, they underwent special training according to the standards of the Imperial Guard, as their duty was to protect the capital, the Emperor, and the imperial family. For this reason, their combat strength could be considered among the finest in the Han Dynasty, comparable to, or only slightly below, a seasoned expeditionary force stationed on the frontier. Equipment of the Han Imperial Guards Unlike regular soldiers on the battlefield, the Imperial Guards always appeared in polished, gleaming equipment. Their swords and spears shone brightly, their weapons and armor were forged from the finest metals available. Their armor was also gilded on the outside to enhance its impressive appearance (gold itself was not used structurally because it is soft and unsuitable for armor). With such distinctive equipment, foreign envoys arriving in the Han capital Chang’an during the Western Han or Luoyang during the Eastern Han would bow respectfully before the majesty of the Celestial Empire. Benefits and Service Conditions of the Han Imperial Guards They served the Dynasty until the age of thirty five. After that, they could either continue serving the Han Empire in a regular military garrison or return to their hometown and pursue other work. Their salary and benefits were among the best of all standing units of the Han. Their meals were comparable to those of a scholar official. However, they were strictly forbidden from drinking alcohol and from approaching palace women (in other words, they had to avoid any woman inside the palace to prevent unnecessary disturbances). Conclusion This was an elite force, carefully selected and rigorously trained to safeguard the imperial palace and the capital. Their only disadvantage was the limited opportunity for real combat, thus, their strength can only be judged objectively based on the fact that they were chosen from the most elite soldiers of all military districts across the Empire. #totalwar #threekingdoms #totalwarthreekingdoms #china #chenguohui_strategygames
