What made the Imperial Guards of the Han Dynasty so special that their position became one of the most sought after roles in the Han military system? After that, they could either continue serving the Han Empire in a regular military garrison or return to their hometown and pursue other work. Their salary and benefits were among the best of all standing units of the Han. Their meals were comparable to those of a scholar official. However, they were strictly forbidden from drinking alcohol and from approaching palace women (in other words, they had to avoid any woman inside the palace to prevent unnecessary disturbances).
