Our layering system that keeps us warm and cozy for winter hikes! 🥾 1. Wool base layer - we love @smartwool base layers because they wick moisture and keep us toasty warm. 2. Mid-layer - we like to add this layer because this is usually what we end up hiking in when we are warmed up. This can be a fleece, a light sweatshirt, a polyester blend. It traps in some added warmth. This layer is also optional - you can choose to go without it on mild winter hikes! Brad wears a lightweight fleece and I enjoy wearing a polyester blend @rei pullover that has a high neck. 3. A puffy coat or insulating layer - a warm puffy coat will keep you warm while gazing out over summit views or when you first leave your car. On harsh winter days you may be hiking with this layer, but wind can pull heat from your body quickly, so you'll likely be wearing your shell over this if it's that cold. We love our @easternmntnsports hooded puffy coats! 4. A shell - this is a weatherproof layer that blocks wind and traps your body heat within the other layers. It should also be waterproof or water resistant so melted snow and ice don't get your other layers wet. I wear a gortex @mountainhardwear shell and Brad wears a @thenorthface shell. Staying dry is the most important rule on winter hikes. Stay away from cotton base layers, and shed layers before you start sweating!
