I'm a 6'1", 320 lb, 37 year old man and that guy gave ME uncomfortable anxiety.
He seems like the kind of guy who wants you to put the lotion in the basket, if you know what I mean...

As someone a bit older than you & also raised in the same Northern Appalachian mountains, I can assure you that the men who raised me also raised me to stay the heck away from any men you come across in the woods. Literally first & only lesson. Not ever Watch for coyotes or bear or deer…just men, watch out for men.

if you are a man on a trail and see a woman walking by herself, leave her alone.

I’m a bigger guy (6’1”, 230lbs) if I see a woman on a trail when I’m hiking I will steer as far to the opposite side of the trail. Say hello give a wave and keep moving. No one owes me a greeting but we owe each other a sense of safety.

As soon as a man takes offence at my need for safety he’s proven himself unsafe

I hike alone. Whenever I cross someone’s path I steer to the far side of the trail. Maybe a quick “hello”. I’m a large guy and I can only imagine what people think so I try to steer clear as much as I can

public service announcement: women don't owe men shit. especially if they're alone. double that for alone in the woods or anywhere private.

I, too, was raised hunting and fishing. I was taught that encountering men in the woods was level 10/10 dangerous and to have my piece ready to go if I saw one. I was told it’s “better to be judged by twelve than carried by six.” I know many other women given the same instructions. Also, as a hiker, this guy should know trail etiquette. When you encounter other hikers, you give them as wide of berth as possible, tip your head politely, maybe throw in a “good morning,” or “there’s a large downed log on the trail about a mile up” and keep going. You don’t expect a response. “Hi” is an open ended invitation to converse and that’s why he’s offended because she didn’t accept the invitation. He knows better. Hikers aren’t there to socialize.
