Howls moving castle is nothing like the book because Miyazaki needed to make it anti war really really bad (based)

unpopular opinion but ~most~ book adaptions would work better as a series. i feel like it’s almost impossible to faithfully mold a book into a standard 3 act hollywood structure movie

Profoundly pitiful :
The blade runner example is so good, I read the book first before I was into movies and hence hadn’t seen it so when I eventually watched the movie it was just not what i enjoyed about the book

this is definitely the Princess Diaries for me. I really do love the movies, but other than being about a girl named Mia who finds out she's a princess, they are nothing like the books I loved as a kid

Annihilation diverged from the book a TON, but while I think a lot of the book readers really missed a lot of visual things in the movie, I really think the movie had a really cohesive theme that was satisfying to me in a way the book wasn't.

1) Do androids dream of electric sheep is in my top ten favorite novels; blade runner likewise in my top 10 films. 2) stanley kubrick’s the shining is another favorite movie of mine, I actually prefer it to the book. There was a tv miniseries adaptation of the shining that was much more faithful, even slavishly accurate, to the book. It was terrible! 3) “there will be blood” bore almost no resemblance to “oil,” completely divergent from the novel, making an entirely different point and being about entirely different things. 4) “total recall” was sufficiently different from the short story which inspired it that puishers saw fit to release a novelization of the movie, written by Piers Anthony. Story inslired movie which inspired novel.

Howls Moving Castle is one of my all time favorite movies, has been for years but I just recently decided to read the book it was based on. They have the same general story strokes but they're VERY different. I like them both but for different reasons tbh

Practical Magic. The movie is good on its own. The books are really good too, but they are so different from the film that they don’t get a chance.

The only thing in common between the book "I, Robot" and the 2004 movie was the title, and that both contained robots.

I feel this exact same way about the Francis Ford Coppola version of Dracula because almost every adaptation since has featured the same reincarnation romance. And now viewers of those adaptations start reading the book expecting a Dracula/Mina romance, and are disappointed to learn that she is, in fact, actually devoted to her husband and harbors no secret attraction for the count.

I’m not sure this is always a bad thing. For example, Arrival is an adaptation of Story of Your Life by Ted Chiang, which is a weird cerebral short story that would be almost impossible to adapt faithfully into a movie that anyone would go see. Arrival takes the core of the story and turns it into Hollywood blockbuster material. As a huge fan of both the short story and movie, I think the changes were necessary to make the story work in the medium of film (I made a 20 minute video essay yapping about this lol)

The Little Mermaid. Literally every retelling and adaptation has been based on the Disney movie when the ending of the original fairytale is insanely different.

How to Train Your Dragon, I started reading the series after seeing the first movie and ended up really liking them, but it’s basically a completely different story and there’s no chance of it getting an accurate adaptation
