Let's be real, having a pole vault pit is ideal, but Unfortunately for many of us (myself included) we don't have access to a pit as much as our hearts long for it. So here are a few ways to get better at this sport without a pit. [Watching video] There is all sorts of research out there on visualization and how it benefits sport performance. Watching video helps create the nuropathways in your brain so when you do have access to a pit the vault will come that much easier. The trick here is watching videos of how you want to vault. Stay away from fail videos or you're going to have a wild surprise. [Speed training] The easiest way to get better at vaulting is by getting faster. Find speed coach to write you a program or I have some over at Team-Hoot.com that you can do at home. You don't need a pit to work on speed. [Becoming a student of the event] There is so much awesome content out on the interwebs that will help you understand the event better. @risepolevault has an awesome podcast with vault experts. Lots of elite coaches and clubs are posting more. There are too many to post so add them in the comments for me! Just remeber to be curious and ask questions. There's also a lot of junk out there. Not having a pit is a big reason why I wrote The Pole Vault Toolbox, so you could have the tools to get better at this sport even if you don't have a pit.
