I just tell myself “it will hurt. But it will hurt for only a second. It will be uncomfortable for a it. And then it will be over.” That’s more helpful than “it’s no big deal, it doesn’t hurt at all!”

Another needle fear girly - another big thing for me is “three poke max”. I have super small veins and am anemic and as a kid, I would get stabbed 6-9 times before docs would stop bc I would be fully panicking and screeching and scaring adults. As an adult, the office I see does 3 pokes and then they’ll reschedule. Which is annoying but thankfully, it means they are REALLY intentional with where they poke

as someone who hates needles & passes out, the best thing you can do is tell your phlebotomist. I walk in and say “Hi. I am not good with needles or blood. I do not want to see the needle, I do not want you to tell me when you’re going to do it and I do not want to see the blood viles when you’re done.”

another piece of advice is to drink plenty of water, hydrated veins are easier to find and hold up well! i get blood draws semi often and i have skinty and very deep veins so i try to drink like 40oz before i go. i dont have a fear of needles but i still dont like to look when they put it in lmao

No my secret to life is to tell people “this is my first time I have ever done this…(I need help with/where can I go for/what does this mean/ how do I do this?)” something flips in their brain and they like slow down and become better/nicer people 🤣

Medical assistant here. Needle fearing or not, 27 is not that uncommon to not have gotten labs done if you’ve been healthy and no big family history stuff 🤷‍♀️I have had 40 year olds getting their first blood draw

If you get a good phlebotomy, you can't feel it

You can ask for anti-anxiety meds, use topical lidocaine, use a device like a “shot blocker” (just a slightly pointy plastic disc that confuses your nerves around the draw site so the stick hurts less), ask for an ice pack to apply right after. You can even ask to physically recline during the draw if you tend to feel faint, so you don’t have to worry about tipping over. You can have a support person hold your hand. Whatever you need to do to feel comfortable, don’t hesitate to ask for it! Anyone who hassles you about it is being a jerk and a good phlebotomist will meet you where you’re at.

I was like this but unfortunately my body betrayed me and gave me a mysterious disease (now diagnosed) that everyone needed my blood to puzzle out and then I was hospitalized for 6 days and REALLY had to get over it lol

People need to start describing properly what getting blood drawn feels like. "A little pinch" or "it feels like nothing" are obviously bullshit. I believe people would be less scared if they could get a realistic expectation of what will happen

Did you see the guy who had his blood drawn at home for some reason and he put down a tarp with a chair in the center and asked if she needed a mop, and the nurse was flabbergasted?

I never look at it, I make sure I’m hydrated so my veins aren’t tricky for them, and I get a treat after. So easy, so grown up. I hope your vid inspires some people!

I don’t think I ever had blood work until around 30? A few years ago? My drs never told me to…? Also you CAN feel it. It doesn’t hurt but it is over fast. Also they can use a small needle if you have small veins like me!

My husband and our oldest son also have a huge fear of needles! I’m lucky that I don’t have that fear. I get regular bloodwork for my RA, Hashimoto’s and other health issues. I also get monthly infusions. Imagine having a needle stuck in your arm for a long time for an infusion. My husband has zero health issues so that’s good since he never goes to the doctor ever! Our son actually faints when he has to deal with any needles, he even fainted at the dentist and hit his head. I’m very proud of you! 👏🏼I don’t think it’s a big deal but I’m just used to it so I think it’s great that you had a good experience. I always talk to people when I’m getting my blood drawn, it just helps I think.

im a former needle-fearer and I was in the ER, and the nurse said I have really nice veins and asked if a student could do my blood draw. im always down to be a guinea pig and in that moment decided I cant cry for a student's first draw and ever since then im like oh its really nbd

first got my blood drawn at 32 ✌️I'm not afraid of needles but I've never had much contact with doctors cuz we didn't have insurance growing up so it was the fear of the unknown. I'm getting on track now. proud of me and proud of you!

it's not the pain, for me it's the *idea* of a needle going IN MY SKIN. My SKIN!!! you mean the largest organ in my body, who's whole purpose is to keep me safe by keeping stuff OUT!? feels disrespectful to be like "haha. Skin, NEEDLE!" anyhow it makes me feel really icky. But I do it anyhow if I absolutely need to, but I have passed out, and once I caused a lot of chaos in the lab because apparently I wouldn't wake back up for an alarming amount time.

I used to be terrified, then I had a load of compulsory vaccinations to work in healthcare (Hepatitis B, Covid and Tuberculosis) and had to have blood taken for Hep B and other health issues, so I adjusted. I get through it by looking away, talking the whole way through it, and using the nails of my thumb and ring finger to pinch the pad of my middle finger as a distraction
