The Trump administration did not say nursing “isn’t a real profession.” What actually happened is the Department of Education changed the definition of a “professional degree” only for federal student loan rules. Under this new definition, fields like medicine, dentistry, law, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine are classified as professional degrees, but nursing and several other health programs were not included on that list. Because of that, starting in 2026, nursing graduate students will have much lower federal loan limits — only $20,500 per year and $100,000 total, instead of being able to use unlimited Grad PLUS loans like before. This affects how much financial aid nursing students can access, not the legitimacy, value, or status of the nursing profession itself. Nursing is still fully recognized, licensed, and essential this change impacts loans, not the career.
