@pbsnews: Viola Fletcher, the oldest living survivor of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, has died at 111 years old. Fletcher was just 7 years old when a white mob destroyed the Greenwood district of Tulsa, once known as Black Wall Street, killing hundreds, burning businesses, schools, and churches, and leaving as many as 10,000 people homeless. Fletcher was one of two survivors who sued the state of Oklahoma seeking damages from the city. Last year the state's Supreme Court rejected their case, dealing a serious setback to a decades-long fight for reparations. Fletcher’s grandson, in confirming her passing, said “she had a beautiful smile on her face… she loved life, she loved people.” #pbsnews #newshour #pbsnewshour #news #tulsa #oklahoma #blackhistory

This country will never change. If they wanted to do right by us they would. They make a conscious choice not to.

Rest in peace Viola Fletcher, I’m so sorry our world failed you on so many levels. I hope you can finally find some much-deserved peace. I hope my generation is able to make great progress towards equity, inclusion, diversity, and equal rights. But first, we have to actively protect the rights we still do have before they are stripped away. The fight never ends. We will not give up, I promise you that Viola Fletcher.
