HOW PERFECTIONISM CAN AFFECT YOU AS AN ATHLETE (and what you can do about it to show up in a more balanced & sustainable way!🧠💗🏑) Perfectionism is deep-rooted and LAYERED. Yet, it is very common in high-performers & elite sports. A characteristic that can lead you far and put you on another level, but at what cost??? Sometimes the root of perfectionism is deeper than it seems. It can stem from: - Growing up or being in environments where you have subconsciously learned that love or support was conditional. That you have to show up PERFECT in order to feel “good enough” for someone else. Which ultimately is a break down in your SELF-WORTH.❤️‍🔥🌟 - When you have fear of shame, criticism, or rejection. Which is definitely a concept I feel like can be reinforced in sport (especially toxic cultures). - When you are in a high-pressure environment that does not promote mistakes as learnings, but instead as failures. This can lead you to correlate self-criticism / constant correction as a way to feel safe. The truth is there are two sides to perfectionism. I am grateful to have experienced BOTH on my journey. One side, yes can get you to a place where you can achieve your goals, dreams, and success. Whereas the other side, can lead to deep burnout, a harsh relationship with yourself, and tying your worth to outcome and achievement!! Which btw… YOU ARE WAY MORE THAN THESE THINGS. And as I shared in this story, a way that you can help beat perfectionism and show up in a more SUSTAINED and BALANCED way… is by: 1️⃣ giving yourself grace 2️⃣ being kind to yourself in the process & knowing your best today is GOOD ENOUGH. And 3️⃣ a little self-compassion… goes a LONG way. It’s time we ask ourselves: •How am I speaking to myself when I make a mistake? • How can I demand highly from myself while also doing it in a balanced & sustainable way? Because your health matters. And you will feel like you have nothing without it. So value yourself, and start seeing your health & wellbeing as PRIORITY.🧠🫀🦵🏽🏆 #fieldhockey #fieldhockeyplayer #fieldhockeylife #teamusa #wholehumanhockey
