I think it was extremely obvious that Miyasaki was talking about himself in this movie and how if he is gone and someone else takes over they should not try to recreate his world but do something that is their own. Especially the son metaphor was CLEAR. I loved it so much because it really felt like a "goodbye".

What most people don't know this movie is supposed to be about Isao Takahata as Miyazakis Mentor. He is the old man. When he died Miyazaki changed the script a lot and this is the result.
