This week I'm walking through 7 hands-on birth partner techniques - so far we have covered the double hip squeeze, sacral counterpressure, the supported lean & sway, temple & jaw softening touch.. Today.. slow, downward arm strokes 🥰 This one looks subtle but it’s surprisingly powerful for good reason.. Slow, rhythmic touch does something that words and encouragement can't: it directly activates your parasympathetic nervous system - that the rest and digest response, aka what you want! - and signals to your body that it is safe. And oxytocin - the hormone that drives contractions - flows best in conditions of safety and low adrenaline. When touch is slow and rhythmic, skin receptors called C-tactile afferents send signals along a specific nerve pathway that leads to oxytocin release and nervous system downregulation. This isn't speculative.. it's actually measurable!! And it's why slow touch in labour isn't just comforting, it's physiologically supportive of the birth process itself. How to do it (I mean, this one is pretty self explanatory 😅 but for completeness, birth partner: ✨ Sit or stand beside them ✨ Start at their shoulders, stroke slowly down their arms all the way to their hands ✨ Long, deliberate, continuous strokes ✨ Match the pace to their breathing ✨ Slower than feels natural - that slowness is the signal Day 6 tomorrow 💛 💫 Grab my free Birth Partner Cheat Sheet which can serve as inspo on what support might look like for you at every stage of labour
