Locations. There's a common argument in the hiking and outdoors community about sharing locations. On one side are those who think all locations should be shared and that as long as we educate people about leave no trace, then people will act responsibly. The other side are those who say nothing should be shared because people will ruin those places. It's a hard line to walk. And, it's a lot of accountability to have on your shoulders if you're someone who posts photos of places. What do I share? What don't I share? I tend to fall in the middle. If it's a trail in a National Park or area that has a ton of services and can handle the visitation? A-ok to share. Examples of those are hikes in the Grand Canyon, hikes in most state parks, hikes with trailheads that have bathrooms and trash cans and regular visitation and monitoring by the Forest Service. Ones that I do not share the location: hikes that are in areas down dirt roads that are difficult to get to and have little or no Forest Service support, hikes at trailheads with no bathrooms or trash or services, hikes in fragile ecosystems that cannot handle increased visitation. Or hikes that I think are overly dangerous and someone might get hurt trying to get there. The lawyer in me says

The lawyer in me says "I don't want that liability". For example, this arch had no graffiti in it. It was glorious. No etchings in the sandstone, nothing. It is a stark difference to other easy to reach arches and caves that are FILLED with graffiti. So why share anything at all? I want to inspire you. Inspire you to seek adventure. To find those spots that make your heart soar. I want to share the beauty of these places to those who are unable to get there physically. I want you to feel the way I feel about the outdoors: that we should protect it at all cost, advocate for it, cherish it, and do our best to keep it pristine. The way that we cultivate a community of outdoor advocates is by showing people how beautiful and special these places are. And therein lies the delicate balance: show enough to foster love of the outdoors and create advocates for our public lands, but not enough to destroy those very places you seek to protect. Share responsibly.
