I have a theory: Will didn't gain new powers; he's using Vecna's through the Hive (Mind Flayer). We know the Mind Flayer wasn't killed in season 2; they only destroyed a physical avatar he had created. My theory is that the Mind Flayer is trying to make Will Vecna's successor. The Mind Flayer is the consciousness of the Upside Down; it senses what creatures see and feel, and it can also see through Vecna, who is its current "champion." Will started seeing through Vecna/the Demogorgons as if something activated within him, or as if someone opened a gateway to the Upside Down's consciousness for him. Who else could do that besides the Mind Flayer? The connection between the Mind Flayer and Will intensified after season 4, when Vecna was defeated and weakened (his form in season 5 is better suited to close combat, but he was weakened). The Mind Flayer wanted to change champions to a new, stronger one. And my theory makes sense when you review the story: Will was captured and linked to the Mind Flayer in some way. Then their connection deepened after Vecna's defeat. The Mind Flayer isn't looking for the strongest or least human host; it's looking for someone easy to manipulate, and Will fits the bill, plus he's already linked to the Mind Flayer.
