@mwmhpodcast: What should’ve been a harmless night of Mischief Night fun became one of the darkest crimes in Greenwich history. On October 30, 1975, 15-year-old Martha Moxley spent the evening laughing and hanging out with neighborhood friends, including the wealthy and well-known Skakel brothers. It was the kind of night every teen in Belle Haven looked forward to — pranks, jokes, and staying out late. But sometime after 9:30 p.m., Martha began the short walk toward her home… and never made it to her front door. The next morning, she was found beneath a tree in her yard, brutally attcked with a golf club so violently that it snapped — the broken piece then used to stb her. That club came from the Skakel home. Rumors spread fast. Both Thomas and Michael Skakel had been seen with Martha that night, and investigators later argued that jealousy, rejection, and teenage obsession may have fueled the violent outburst. But the Skakel name carried power — and for decades, evidence was buried under influence, silence, and privilege. It wasn’t until 2002 — 27 years later — that Michael Skakel was finally convicted of Martha’s m*rder, though his conviction was overturned in 2018. Martha’s life ended on a night meant for teenage fun, a chilling reminder that even the wealthiest neighborhoods can hide terrifying secrets.
