Knowing that as a bipolar woman if I had been born just a few decades earlier I would’ve been subjected to treatment like this is haunting

not mental health but autism, in those days autistic people were locked up and it’s so sad

A drag path but it’s just Dorothea dix who struggled with mental health, physical health, and a abusive childhood who was the main leader of the prison and asylum reform getting mental hospitals built and was a nurse during the civil war

The sad thing is when I was in hospital for mental health how you are treated is quite similar. People don’t realise this, it’s changed but not significantly.

the history of mental health and health in general is so disturbing. it's crazy that back then, if you showed something that wasn't somewhat normal back then, you could possibly put into an asylum or a mental health center or something and be subjected into horrible things and endure hours of torture or loneliness☹️🙁

there are studies showing that the avg adult and teenager today have similar anxiety levels to those institutionalized years ago, that alone should tell you how BAD the crisis is becoming

As someone who has ocd, that genuantly wasnt even recognized till 1970's or 1980's. my MOM is younger than condition. But its recirded in history as either
a) odd quirk
b) possesed by the devil. And you can see whare THAT would lead you in society 💔

When I was younger I noticed a single picture in my great grandma’s room with a woman that I now know had down syndrome. I finally got the courage to look into her history. She was taken away immediately after birth, and lived a massive chunk of her life in a mental health facility. She hated going back home when her facility closed because her family were strangers to her. We barely have any photos of her… and it hurts knowing her mother didn’t get to bond with her kid before the state took her away for YEARS. She never got the childhood she deserved.
