100% disagree. actors don’t have to out themselves nor do they have to have lived experience to play a part. that’s their job.

I was absolutely dreading this part of Heated Rivalry being out tbh. I cannot imagine as an actor having my sexuality demanded of me. Its so fucking weird to hear queer people demanding this too. And I say that as a queer women. It is literally disgusting to demand that people disclose their sexuality.

I agree with 98% of your takes usually but not this one. We’ve seen it happen before where an actor is forced to come out before they’re ready. We’re not owed anyone’s sexuality. Look at what the Heated Rivalry cast is already experiencing.

Jonathan Bailey has played multiple straight roles recently, Neil Patrick Harris and Jim Parsons played straight roles on long running tv shows for years.

I think the issue is too complex for such a black and white take on it.

My point isn’t that straight actors can’t act. It’s that queer actors are still not being given equal opportunity to play queer roles meanwhile straight actors have access to every role, queer or straight.
Until that imbalance changes, it’s fair to prioritize queer talent for queer stories.

do i love queer actor representation? yes! i think we should cheer that on! but i don’t think it’s fair to require actors to come out (especially in the current political climate) in order to play queer roles. Also, when actors like jonathan bailey are currently doing very well in straight roles, it’s unfair to say that hollywood only wants queer ppl to play queer roles. at the end of the day, i think queer stories Need queer people in the writing room or in the directors room, That is what matters to me, not the sexuality of the actors. as long as the actors are treating the roles with respect and taking it seriously!

This is important for two reasons: we hire more openly queer actors AND protect closeted ones

disagree completely. a gay actor playing a gay role is a bonus but should never be a requirement because 1) gay actors can and do regularly play straight roles too, and 2) nobody should be forced to divulge their sexuality just to get a role

There are many queer actors who play straight roles too like Jonathan Bailey, or Russell Tovey, so i don't think it matters.

what about the queer actors who aren't out then?Don't they deserve to work too? It's not the actors fault but the industry,we should strive to bring change to that, not fight among ourselves for scraps

what you mean is that these roles should go to *openly* queer celebrities and that’s the issue… you just cant ask people and really you shouldnt need to…

Please watch Jacob Tierney’s interview response to speculation on the sexuality of the main characters. It’s very important to understand the legal realms of this too.

what about roles where the gay character is a child/minor like ian from shameless or nico from percy jackson? idk i feel like that’s a hole in this thinking bc a child shouldn’t have to come out/discuss their sexuality to play a queer role, they might not even know their sexuality. it’s like what happened with nick from heartstopper, he was 17 and not ready to come out as bi but he was forced to bc people said he was straight and taking a queer role away from a queer actor

Jim Parsons as Sheldon, Neil Patrick Harris as Barney, Wentworth Miller as Michael, Sara Gilbert as Lesley. Lots of queer people play hetro characters because they're the best person for the job. It's about talent, not what they do in their personal lives.

Requiring a person to disclose their sexuality to get a job is wrong. Actors act, that's their job. People don't owe others their private lives.

On the fence with this. I do think we need to get back to a focus on good acting over anything else. In the case of Heated Rivalry, that breakdown had pretty intense requirements with the hockey stuff

Who are these openly gay actors who are not given straight roles? Genuinely, could you name some? Nearly every gay or queer actor I’ve ever heard of has played straight roles.
