‘If you’re Jewish why do you have a Christmas tree?’ I spoke about it last year and I’ll happily speak about it every year if I need to ❤️ I’m Jewish, my husband is Jewish, and growing up we celebrated both Christmas and Chanukah. Adam had a Christmas tree and has a lot of non Jewish family. Living in England, Christmas is everywhere. My non-Jewish friends had Christmas trees and I was always jealous, I think all my Jewish friends were! My parents chose not to have one because they’re very traditional (and I think they always thought it had religious connotations) but every Christmas Eve we still left treats out for Father Christmas and his reindeer, and every Christmas morning we opened presents from a big sack at the end of our bed instead of under a tree. I didn’t go to a Jewish school, but I have ALWAYS been incredibly proud to be Jewish. I was very much immersed in a multicultural environment at school, whilst at home, we kept strong Jewish traditions and values and still do today and will do forever. And to me, having a Christmas tree doesn’t undermine those values at all. A tree isn’t a religious symbol, for me, it’s pretty, it’s sparkly, and it makes my kids (and my husband, who grew up with one) really happy and it definitely does NOT make this menschy house any less Jewish. In a couple of weeks, when we light the Menorah next to our tree, our home will be full of even more light, warmth, and joy. And that is all I care about. So yes, I have a Christmas tree. It doesn’t make me less Jewish. It doesn’t make me Christian. It just makes our home happy. #christmas #chanukah #jewish #family #Love
