Spice Girls ‘Wannabe’ UK Store Display Board (June 1996) Here we have the first look at the artwork for the UK promotional campaign for ‘Wannabe’. It states the originally intended UK release date for the single of 1st July 1996. This display board, used in record shops in June 1996 to promote the upcoming release of the single, features the same picture of the band (taken by Enrique Badulescu in March 1996) as the single cover for ‘Wannabe’ in South East Asia which was released two weeks earlier. This time however, the image retains it’s original colour and dimensions, differing from the stretched monochrome use of the image on the South East Asian single cover. We also see the now-iconic Spice Girls logo for the first time. Although technically their second official logo (following the totally different Japanese ‘Wannabe’ single), this and even more famous variations of it became synonymous with the band and their countless merchandise items. The bottom of the board details the single formats and cleverly, as often was the case with the Spice Girls, they included the mailing list membership phone number (an early incarnation of the fan club) in a genius marketing move. This mailing list sent promotional postcards for upcoming music releases, newsletters and tour information to its members over the following two years. It also helped launch the band’s official magazine membership club (which ran from early 1997 to late 1998). All of this helped to build momentum for the group from the very first promotional items before the ‘Wannabe’ single was released. The information part of the board used the group’s font in white over a black background, a striking use of black and white which continued through the band’s career including on the merchandise page in their 2019 tour book.
