You know I love a rant, and the sociology major in me has been thinking a lot about how Americans aren’t actually obsessed with Europe — we’re obsessed with walkability, community, and connection. We’ve built a country where those things are treated like luxuries instead of basics. Affordable housing is scarce, public transit is unreliable, and safe bike lanes are rare. Most people don’t “choose” car-dependent suburbs without and third spaces— they’re priced out of cities and left with no real alternatives.
 The way I see it, this is because so much of the U.S. is run like a business. Many of our communities are designed around corporate profit and money-hungry developers, rather than the people who actually live in them. The result is endless sprawl, higher costs of living, and neighborhoods that isolate instead of connect.
 Americans shouldn’t have to fly across the ocean to experience the joy of walking to a café, picking up groceries for dinner from a local market, or sitting in a public square surrounded by life. That’s not some uniquely foreign way of life— it’s human-centered design.
 If our cities were built for people and planet instead of profit, maybe we’d finally get to experience that quality of life right here at home.
