I don't think that erasing Abrahamic religions from the world will change the fundamental thing in us that gave rise to them in the first place. If they were gone, we would create replacements with identical or similar pitfalls and weaknesses.

I believe that is exactly why our founding fathers wrote The Constitution to separate church and state.

that's the most optimistic calculus imo. the less optimistic one is... what if the institutions are too salient (at this point in history, anyway) for the possibility you're describing to work? what if, in refusing to use those (admittedly, inherently flawed) tools, the risk of obsolescence/annihilation is far greater than the promise of liberation? if this leads to balkanization that makes a (more just, inclusive, empowering, restorative) secular spiritual practice more vulnerable to suppression at the hands of Christian nationalists who captured the most salient institutions? what if the options aren't true liberation vs incomplete liberation, but the hope of passing the torch vs the extinguishing of that torch (for decades or even centuries)?

Perhaps, we need not worry about what Christianity or whatever concept it is that people hold? That seems like the trap. We put too much of ourselves in times that aren’t now.

You talk about historical Jesus. I understand the differentiation from the right wing reactionary Jesus, but is there such a thing as an ‘historical Jesus’? We get our information from the bible, which are theological not historical texts

I think we just need to stop branding movements as the “thing” that we see as truth. Even if we completely abolish Christianity and the systems of religion new ones will be created that once again when societies go to fall they will look to these things outside of themselves. It’s about changing things from the inside out. Changing the outside systems will do nothing except a temporary facade of freedom if we don’t change what’s on the inside.

I read this recently: happy people don’t need religion. So the way we solve this is to make a happier secular society, perhaps

I thought these golden ages etc were cyclic eras ? and I don't think you can ever get "rid" of Christianity it's always been there for those that want it same as any spiritual practice .
humans will always move forward progressively doesn't mean it'll be better necessarily though.

Letting go of Jesus is not an option for me. But not letting religion and government operate together, is the key, must be separate. Organize religion is the problem.

If you look at the history of when religions were founded, you'll see they all seem to get into some structured authority, which later leads to infighting schisms?
I think humanity needs to find a new way to organize itself. And find other ways than authoritarian structures

I like the ideas of Lea Yupi, because she talks about Democratic socialism and how society must find ways to provide both freedom and responsibility to our obligations. so that individual rights do not allow for the destruction of other individuals or the environment.

You make a lot of great points. I see it more as a problem with us as a species rather than Christianity in particular. We can eliminate all the religions we want, and yet that part of our brain that seeks out authoritarian religion will still be present.

I see progressive Christianity as a place for people who absolutely CAN'T move on. not everyone can. not everyone will. what does it even mean to "move on" as a society anyway?
