Im a master tech and work for Honda and can do that timing belt with water pump in 45mins easily. What people dont understand about dealers is its about repetition.

well yes and no the Honda dealership was honest on the timing yes to a certain degree but when it came to that o i l leak no there was not honest I do not blame the guy to get that resolved right then it could have been a lot worse down the road I always believe when it is all apart where you can see everything go ahead and resolve the issues at hand so no problems at all as well double the money if you have to go back in there

This is why they are called “master mechanics“. You perform a task repeatedly for years, you get faster each time with “usually” better results than the previous. I’m a certified driveway mechanic but only to our household vehicles. Need brakes? 8 minutes per wheel. Wheel bearing swap in 15-20. Hell I had tearing down my Powerstroke 6. Ooooh top end to replace those damn injector cups and rings down to a science. Hot no start? Give me 90 minutes all 8. So a master Honda tech, 1 hour timing belt and whatever else, at Honda, in a fully equipped HONDA shop, that’s a morning warm up for him.

That seems like overkill but two things to note. Timing chains last much longer than belts. If it’s an interference engine and the belt breaks the engine is toast. I’ve done a Honda and couple of Lexus belt/seals/tensioner but nobody is doing that in an hour.

I’m glad my Honda dealership in Harrisonburg, Virginia is top notch and they are always transparent and honest and they don’t try to sell you extra services or tell you that you need a bunch of extra work done. I have dealt with some shady dealerships in the past though

35 minutes was how long it took many other master techs to do the timing belt kits on most Honda's. Flat rate is not the life for the weak.

I was nissan tech for 13 years. I could change a timing belt,waterpump, cam seals and tensioner in about 90 minutes. on xterras frontier pathfinder. didnt change crank seal because 1 they never leak 2 u almost always mess up crank pulley.
