Libya had reportedly supplied the United States with oil valued at around 360 billion USD, a figure that was never fully settled. When the Arab Spring erupted and instability swept across the region, it created the perfect opening for powerful countries to intervene. Removing Gaddafi not only reshaped Libya politically but also meant those outstanding obligations would never have to be honoured. Together, these two factors fuel the argument that his downfall was less about humanitarian concerns and more about protecting global financial and geopolitical interests.
