Blood clots are a complication of untreated vein disease. Some blood clots are more dangerous than others. This is an example of superficial thrombophlebitis, a condition where a blood clot forms in a vein just below the surface of the skin. Superficial thrombophlebitis typically causes pain, swelling, redness, and warmth along the affected vein just like you see here. Treatment often involves relief of the symptoms with pain relief, anti-inflammatory medication, and occasionally, blood thinners. If the blood clot stays in the superficial varicosities, then patients typically do not need blood thinners, but they do need close follow up. These clots can continue to irritate other veins causing more veins to clot. The closer these superficial clots come toward your deep veins, the more dangerous and life-threatening they can be. A repeat ultrasound should be scheduled, and if the patient notices more redness, pain, and hard veins approaching the thigh, groin, or behind the knee with worsening of their symptoms a few days after their initial presentation, then another ultrasound should be done immediately in order to make sure that the clot has not entered the saphenous vein or the deep veins. Once these veins are clotted and they have hardened, removing them is no longer a good option. The body may absorb the vein leaving the skin dark and hardened. Approximately 9% of the time, superficial thrombophlebitis can directly lead to a pulmonary embolus which is a blood clot in the lung. Any signs of chest pain or shortness of breath require a call for an ambulance and emergency services. If the entire leg begins to swell, then this is a sign that the clot may have extended into the deep vein and now the clot has blocked all of the blood from leaving the leg. This also requires emergency evaluation. Treating varicose veins before they clot is key to health. Call Nelson Vein at (440) 617-6061 or visit NelsonVein.com 24/7 to request a consultation for healthy legs that look and feel great. #nelsonvein #varicoseveins #microphlebectomy #loveyourlegs #bloodclots #superficialthrombophlebitis #dvt #pulmonaryembolism #pe @VeinGirl/Varicose Veins
